Swans set this poster apart from the many wildlife images on the board, and its message is aimed at the public rather than at scientists. The National Park Service issued it in the 1930s, when the agency was using posters to promote its parks and the case for protecting native animals. By then, the trumpeter swan had been hunted and its habitat reduced to the point that it had nearly disappeared from much of the country, so a bird like this stood for a wider concern about what had already been lost. Dorothy Waugh's design presents the swans as something worth saving, not as game.
