Cares of a Family," issued by Currier & Ives in New York in 1865, is filed among the firm's bird subjects, suggesting a domestic scene of birds tending their young. The firm, run by Nathaniel Currier and James Merritt Ives, produced inexpensive hand-colored lithographs that reached a broad middle-class market, and its rural and barnyard sentiment was especially popular in the years after the Civil War. The print is listed in a 1983 Gale Research catalog raisonné of the firm's work, which helps place it among the many sentimental lithographs the company issued in the 1860s.
