A 1913 color poster, the parrots on it set it apart from the canal views that usually accompany Panama promotion. Its record links the image to tourism to the isthmus, a pitch that made sense while the waterway was still under construction and drawing American attention. The canal was one of Theodore Roosevelt's signature projects, begun during his presidency, and the poster reflects how the country was learning to see Panama as a destination as well as a construction site.
