The Happy Family" belongs to a popular nineteenth-century theme in which creatures that would ordinarily prey on or fear one another are shown living in peaceful harmony, a comic reversal of the natural order. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that published this lithograph around 1874, produced such sentimental and humorous scenes in large numbers for a broad middle-class public. The print is listed as number 2936 in *Currier & Ives: A catalog Raisonné*, compiled by Gale Research and published in 1983. Its appeal lies in that gap between the calm scene and the instincts it sets aside.
