Two bison lie down beside a quiet stream in this color lithograph, a scene that reads more like a pastoral painting than a field record. The print carries a copyright notice to Louis Kurz of Chicago and dates to about 1911, when the American bison had been pushed to the edge of extinction after decades of hunting, and when a few small herds survived in parks and private preserves. Images like this one helped shape a growing public sense that the animal was worth protecting, so the calm, unhurried mood here is worth noticing.
