Here Adam stands in a garden of Eden, naming the animals that gather around him, a scene drawn from the second chapter of Genesis, where God brings each creature before the first man to see what he will call it. The lithograph was published by Nathaniel Currier in New York in 1847, before the firm became Currier & Ives, and it was hand colored, a method that let a single printed sheet be finished by hand to add color and a touch of individuality. Such prints were sold cheaply to a broad middle-class public, who hung them in parlors and used the Bible scene as a gentle lesson about order and dominion over nature.
