This poster promotes a circus that was a merger of two rival American traveling shows, Adam Forepaugh and Sells Brothers, and its main attraction is a group of trained sea lions. Circus posters of the 1890s were among the most visible advertising of their day, and this one was printed by the Strobridge Lithographing Company, a Cincinnati firm known for its bold chromolithographs. Trained seals and sea lions were a popular novelty act in American circuses of the period, and posters like this one were pasted on walls and fences to draw crowds to the big tent before the show came to town.
