Jellyfish drifting in dark water give this WPA poster its particular character, since the design singles out the translucent creatures that visitors to a Pennsylvania aquarium would most want to see. Hugh Stevenson designed it in Philadelphia for the Federal Art Project, one of the New Deal programs that paid artists to make posters promoting public institutions during the Depression. A date stamp on the back, August 4, 1937, suggests when the print was filed or circulated, though the printed date is given only as 1936 or 1937. The poster's bold color lithography reflects the flat, graphic style that the WPA favored for reaching audiences with little money to spend on entertainment.
