Few seaside buildings in Britain were as novel as the Brighton Aquarium, which opened on the seafront in 1872 and ranks among the earliest public aquariums in the country. Here it stands beside the promenade with a clock tower rising above the front, a reminder of how Victorian visitors combined sea air with spectacle. At a time when live marine life was still a new attraction, crowds came to see fish and sea creatures kept in tanks. The view also shows the resort as it looked to strollers along its front, a setting that shaped how Brighton presented itself to visitors.
