Unlike the plain animal studies on this board, this print is an allegory: its title, "Zoology," names a branch of natural science, so the picture presents an idea about the study of animals rather than a single creature. Copyrighted by the Boston firm Curtis & Cameron and dated to about 1898, it belongs to a fashion of the 1890s for staged photographs in which posed figures stood for subjects such as the arts, sciences, and seasons. Such images were often made for decorative use and education, and they show how photography borrowed the conventions of painting and illustration. Its date also falls in the period when zoology was becoming a more formal academic discipline in American universities.
