Few images show the working floor of the San Francisco Mint as directly as this line engraving of gold being poured into ingots. The Mint opened in 1854 as a branch of the federal system, built to refine and coin the bullion that flowed out of the gold fields after 1849. The engraving, credited to Butler, appeared in the October 1856 issue of *Hutchings' Illustrated California Magazine*, a monthly that introduced the state's industries and landmarks to readers. Its catalog record is marked as unverified, so its details are best read with that caveat in mind.
