Taken at the church of San Francesco di Paola in Naples, this photograph records the funeral of tenor Enrico Caruso, who died in his native city in August 1921 at age 48. Much of Caruso's career had been spent at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, so his death was mourned on both sides of the Atlantic, and a service in his hometown carried particular weight.
