Few San Francisco views of the 1860s show the working waterfront as directly as this one, with a crowd of whaling ships packed into the harbor. The wood engraving was made from a sketch by M.C. Palmer and published in *Harper's Weekly* on December 24, 1864, when the magazine was among the most widely read illustrated papers in the country. San Francisco was a major outfitting port for American whalers, whose ships hunted across the Pacific and into Arctic waters, so the picture records an industry that shaped the city's maritime life. The masts crowding the frame suggest how many vessels the port handled at once.
