This print shows the funeral of tenor Enrico Caruso at the Church of San Francesco di Paola in Naples, held in August 1921. Caruso, the most celebrated opera singer of his era, had died in Naples earlier that month after a serious illness, and his death drew mourners from across the city and well beyond. The photograph carries a copyright credit to Kadel & Herbert, a New York photography firm, so it reflects the commercial image-making of the period.
