A glass negative titled "Capt. Soterios Nicholson" and dated July 20, 1922, carries the name of a man whose role in the sitting the record does not explain. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active in the early twentieth century, used glass plates like this one widely to document officials, public figures, and daily life in the city. The plate later came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Streaks and other blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of its original coating, and they are worth keeping in mind when judging its tones and detail.
