Captain Fred Kochle is the named subject of this glass negative, dated January 23, 1922, and the record preserves his name only as the National Photo Company wrote it on the negative or its sleeve. That company, active in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, made a large body of portraits and news pictures, and its glass plates document the people and public life of the capital in those years. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Its record notes streaks and other blemishes from deterioration of the original coating, which are visible flaws of the medium rather than of the sitter.
