Little is recorded about the sitter beyond the name Fred Butten and the abbreviation "Id." that follows it, which comes from unverified data noted on the negative or its sleeve. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio active in the early twentieth century, produced a large body of glass negatives, and this one is dated to about 1918 to 1921 by comparison with others in the same range. Glass plates of this age often develop streaks and blemishes as their original coatings break down, and the marks visible on this negative are a typical sign of that natural deterioration.
