The only identification for this glass negative is the title "Fred Purnell of Ind.," supplied by the National Photo Company with a date of June 27, 1922, though the library has not verified the name. Glass plates like this one were a common format for press and studio work before flexible film took over. The firm was based in Washington, D.C., and its collection came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. The streaks and blemishes across the plate come from the natural breakdown of its original coatings, which is worth keeping in mind when reading the image.
