Dated June 15, 1922, this glass negative shows a portrait of Dr. Maurice C. Hall, though the name comes from unverified information the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve. The company worked in Washington, D.C., and its large collection of glass negatives documents much of the city's public life in the early twentieth century. Glass plates like this one carried a light-sensitive emulsion on their surface, and over time those coatings can develop streaks and blemishes, which are visible here. The Library of Congress received the plate as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
