Metropolitan Hall, a variety theater in Washington, D.C., is the subject of this negative. Variety theaters of the early twentieth century offered a mixed bill of acts such as singers, comedians, and novelty performers, and they were a common part of city entertainment life. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in Washington during these decades, recorded many of the city's buildings and streets, so this picture belongs to a broader record of the capital's urban life. Because the negative is made on nitrate film, it is fragile and can show streaks and other surface damage.
