A portrait of Maurice Francis Egan, the writer and educator named on this glass negative. The National Photo Company's title comes from data on the negative sleeve that the record describes as unverified. Egan taught English at the University of Notre Dame and at the Catholic University of America before serving as United States minister to Denmark from 1907 to 1918, a post that came after a long career as a Catholic man of letters. The circa 1923 date is inferred from other negatives in the same range rather than from a record of this sitting, so treat it as approximate. The streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of the original coating, which is common in negatives of this age.
