Mahogany Hall takes its name from the dark, polished wood that likely paneled its walls and furnishings, a look popular in clubs, hotels, and public buildings of the 1920s. The title comes from information the National Photo Company wrote on the negative sleeve, though it has not been independently verified. The company was a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that made thousands of glass negatives of the city and its institutions in the early twentieth century. The plate is dated to about 1922, and its original coating has deteriorated, leaving streaks and blemishes across the image.
