Billy Sunday, the former Major League outfielder who became one of the country's best-known evangelists, is the subject of this small glass negative. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented public figures and events in the early twentieth century, made the exposure. The October 22, 1922 date comes from a related negative, not from the plate itself. Sunday's revival campaigns drew large crowds in the years after the First World War, so the portrait captures him at the height of his public reach. Streaks and blemishes across the glass reflect natural deterioration of the original coatings.
