This portrait shows Rear Admiral Thomas Washington, a Navy flag officer, in a formal studio setting typical of the period. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active in the early twentieth century, made large numbers of portraits of officials, officers, and public figures, many for newspaper reproduction. The image survives as a glass negative, a format that allowed many prints from a single plate, though the original coating has deteriorated and left streaks and blemishes. The name comes from information the company recorded on the negative or its sleeve, and the date is inferred from neighboring negatives, so both remain provisional.
