A glass negative labeled as the Rev. Patrick J. Hayes and dated September 27, 1922, places this sitter in a specific autumn day of that year. Hayes was serving as archbishop of New York at the time, a position he held from 1919 until his death in 1938. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active from about the 1910s through the 1940s, made many portraits and news pictures of public figures, and this plate belongs to its collection at the Library of Congress. The record notes the title came from unverified data on the negative sleeve, and that streaks and other blemishes from deterioration of the original coating may be visible.
