Edward S. Curtis made this portrait of a man identified only as Yo Shona, posed with a painted shield, one of the objects he most often placed beside his subjects. Curtis photographed Native American people across the West and Northwest from the 1890s into the 1930s, working toward his multivolume survey *The North American Indian*. Many of his images were staged with regalia, weapons, and ceremonial items he selected himself, so they show a deliberately composed vision of traditional life rather than a candid moment. Viewers today often read the shield and posing as evidence of how a photographer's choices shaped the record of Native lives.
