Herald Square, where Broadway crosses 34th Street, was the home of Macy's flagship store, and this c1931 view centers on its corner façade and the billboards that lined the surrounding streets. By the Depression years the store had long been one of the city's largest retailers. Macy's began its Thanksgiving Day parade in 1924, and the store's Herald Square location became the parade's starting point, which explains the holiday connection on this board. Irving Underhill, whose copyright notice appears on the print, photographed many New York street scenes of this period.
