Among the Thanksgiving pictures on this board, this one shows a lesson in progress at Whittier, the primary school attached to Hampton Institute in Hampton, Virginia. Frances Benjamin Johnston photographed the school around 1899 and 1900, during the same period she documented Hampton's work for an exhibit of its program. Hampton, founded in 1868 to educate African American and American Indian students, trained teachers who often practiced in schools like Whittier, so the scene shows the school's methods as much as the holiday. The children's close arrangement around their teacher is worth a look, since it reflects the classroom practice the photographs were meant to present.
