Louis J. Rhead's color poster for *Harper's Bazar* ties the magazine's name to the Thanksgiving holiday, and it was made as promotion rather than as an illustration for a story. Rhead, an English-born artist who worked in New York, was one of the period's leading poster designers, and his work from the 1890s shows the flat shapes, strong outlines, and decorative color of the poster craze then sweeping American cities. Holiday posters like this one helped magazines stand out on crowded newsstands and in shop windows, so the piece is a useful record of how periodicals marketed themselves at the end of the century.
