Drawn in pencil and Chinese white on tan paper, this sketch shows a Union camp marking Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 28, 1861, the day President Lincoln had set aside for national observance. The artist, Alfred R. Waud, was one of the staff illustrators who sent field sketches to newspapers such as *Harper's Weekly*, where engravers turned them into images for readers at home. Frederic Ray tentatively identified the camp as that of General Louis Blenker, whose division was made up largely of German immigrants and was stationed in northern Virginia at the time. The drawing offers a useful glimpse of soldiers' daily life in the early months of the war.
