Richard Croker, the Tammany Hall leader, and Thomas Platt, the Republican boss of New York State, appear together as hungry supplicants in this Thanksgiving cover from *Puck*'s issue of November 24, 1897. The weekly, published by Keppler & Schwarzmann, was known for its large color lithographs that used current events to mock public figures. Here the joke is simple: two men who wielded enormous patronage power over New York politics are reduced to begging for scraps from the holiday table. Croker and Platt were political rivals, so placing them side by side in the same humble pose adds a pointed layer of satire.
