Howdy Doody, the freckle-faced marionette-like star of the NBC children's show, is dressed here as a Pilgrim for the Thanksgiving Day parades that were a fixture of American holidays by the early 1950s. The show had become one of television's first big hits, so a puppet posed in costume made for an easy draw for crowds and photographers. The picture comes from the New York World-Telegram & Sun collection, a newspaper archive whose photographers documented city life, and it captures a moment when the merging of television celebrity and an old national holiday tradition was new.
