Unlike the many holiday scenes on this board, this item is a printed state document: a leaflet carrying the Thanksgiving Day proclamation issued in 1910 by Governor Gillett from Sacramento, the state capital. Governors across the country issued such proclamations each autumn, asking residents to set aside a day for gratitude and rest. Its modest size suggests it was meant for wide public distribution. The practice traces back to Abraham Lincoln's 1863 proclamation of a national day of thanksgiving, and this leaflet shows how that tradition reached ordinary Californians at the state level.
