The proclamation's title names the New Hampshire Committee of Safety and sets it in 1782, a year when the Revolutionary War was winding down after the British surrender at Yorktown in 1781. Thanksgiving proclamations of this era were issued by colonial and state authorities to call residents to public prayer and gratitude, often in response to the war's progress or to a recommendation from the Continental Congress. Such documents usually set a fixed day of observance and a call to religious worship, so they show how civic and religious life were tied together in the early republic. Read today, the wording offers a direct view of how leaders framed the end of a long conflict.
