Thanksgiving is one of the most frequently pictured American holidays, and this entry belongs to a group of images gathered under that single theme. The holiday traces back to the autumn harvest gathering at Plymouth in 1621, but it did not become a national observance until Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a day of thanksgiving in 1863, in the middle of the Civil War. Artists and photographers returned to the subject again and again, using the family table, the harvest and the gathered household to express ideas about home, plenty and national unity. Seen together, such scenes show how the meaning of the holiday shifted over the decades.
