Few holiday postcards from the early twentieth century were as widely mailed as the Thanksgiving greeting, and this one pairs a plump, colorfully rendered turkey with a short rhyming verse. Cards like it were part of a boom in illustrated postcards that began around the turn of the century, when cheap printing and a reliable postal system made it easy to send a few cheerful words across town or across the country. Holiday designs often leaned on the turkey as a symbol of abundance and the harvest feast, and verses were printed to be read quickly by the recipient. Worth noticing is how the card was meant to be sent rather than kept, so surviving examples show the wear of travel and the handwriting of the people who once used them.
