A Thanksgiving service at Strong Baptist Church is the occasion recorded here, with the congregation gathered to give thanks for the harvest and the year. Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanks in 1863, and in 1941 Congress fixed the holiday on the fourth Thursday of November, but local churches had long held their own services of praise. Baptist congregations often paired such gatherings with hymn singing, scripture reading and a collection for those in need. Little else is recorded about this event, so the scene is best read as a window onto community worship.
