The title pairs the bald eagle with the turkey as "Our National Birds," a playful nod to a long-running American debate. The eagle became the national emblem when the Great Seal was adopted in 1782, while Benjamin Franklin famously wrote in 1784 that the turkey, not the eagle, deserved that honor. By the late 1800s, roasted turkey had become the traditional centerpiece of the Thanksgiving table, which Abraham Lincoln's 1863 proclamation helped make a national holiday. Read together, the two birds capture how American symbols of strength and of home and harvest came to share the same national stage.
