This painting shows the Macy's department store on 34th Street in Manhattan, the flagship building at Herald Square that the company had occupied since 1902. Leo Rackow made it as a tempera poster on board around 1926 to 1928, a period when the store was growing into one of the city's best-known retail landmarks. Macy's had begun its Thanksgiving Day parade in 1924, and by the late 1920s the holiday was closely tied to the store's public image. The work shows how commercial art of the era promoted both a place and a season.
