Few days in the Revolution carry as much weight as November 25, 1783, when the last British troops left New York City and George Washington entered the city in their wake. The British had held New York since the autumn of 1776, so the scene marked the close of a long occupation. Currier & Ives issued this hand-colored lithograph around 1857, when the firm was producing many patriotic scenes for a popular audience eager for images of the nation's founding. Its later date says as much about how Americans remembered the Revolution as it does about the event itself.
