Here Washington appears not as a general or president but as a working farmer, the role he returned to at Mount Vernon after the Revolution and kept through his later years. He was known for experimenting with crop rotation, improved plowing, and livestock breeding, and he kept detailed records of his fields. Nineteenth-century printmakers often used such rural scenes to present him as a plain, virtuous citizen whose modesty offered a model for the young republic. The subject suits a Thanksgiving display, since Washington proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving in 1789, and the harvest theme links the holiday to the land.
