Apple crate labels like this one were printed to sell fruit from a particular orchard and packing house, and the Oneonta Brand label names two Washington growing districts, Wenatchee and Yakima, in its title. Wenatchee, in the Columbia River valley, and Yakima, to the south, were both major apple-growing areas by the early twentieth century, and their fruit was shipped by rail to markets across the country. Crate labels of this kind used bright color lithography and fruit imagery to catch a buyer's eye on a grocer's shelf, and today they show how the fruit trade marketed itself. Their presence on a Thanksgiving board reflects how closely apples were tied to the autumn harvest and holiday tables.
