Velvet Rose was the brand printed on this pumpkin can label from Brighton, a small town in southeastern Iowa. Labels like this one belonged to a busy regional canning trade, when packers relied on colorful lithographed art to stand out on crowded grocery shelves. Canned pumpkin became a staple of American kitchens in the early twentieth century, and it grew closely tied to holiday pies, which explains why a pumpkin label fits among Thanksgiving images. The lettering and color choices show how small local brands competed for buyers.
