Few products on a Thanksgiving table carried as much everyday packaging art as the fruit crate. This label advertised Buddy Brand apples, printed for the Andrews Brothers of Detroit, a firm that produced colorful crate labels to help fruit grower-shippers stand out on crowded wholesale and grocery shelves. Crate labels of this era were chromolithographed, so each color was pressed separately, and their bold illustrations often pictured orchards, fruit, or idealized rural scenes. Apples were a holiday staple, so labels like this one remind us how fresh fruit was marketed to households preparing pies, cider, and autumn dinners.
