Here the scene is aboard the Mayflower on November 11, 1620, as the ship lay at anchor off Cape Cod and the passengers drew up the agreement now called the Mayflower Compact. Tompkins Harrison Matteson painted the subject, and this print reproduces his work through an engraving by Gauthier, published by William Schaus in New York. Made around 1859, it reflects a mid-nineteenth-century tendency to cast the Pilgrims as founders of American self-government, an idea that Thanksgiving observances of the period did much to spread.
