Taken at the lodge on Alexander Graham Bell's summer estate near Baddeck, Nova Scotia, this group portrait brings together the Bell household and friends on Cape Breton Island. Bell, best known for patenting the telephone in 1876, began spending long summers at Baddeck in the mid-1880s, and the place became a family gathering point as well as a working retreat. He later carried out kite, tetrahedral and boat experiments there. Dating to about 1890, the picture shows the estate while Bell was already famous but still building the life he would return to for decades.
