Alexander Graham Bell is the figure at the center of this 1916 photograph, taken at Boston during the unveiling of a plaque marking the 1876 invention of the telephone. Bell, a Scottish-born inventor who had settled in the United States, received the first telephone patent in 1876 and spent much of his later life in the Boston area. Richard W. Sears made the image, and it survives in the Library of Congress as part of the Gilbert H. Grosvenor collection of Bell family photographs, which makes it a useful record of how the inventor was honored while still living.
