Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga, New York, in October 1777 is the event this print depicts, as British General John Burgoyne handed over his army after a campaign that had bogged down in the autumn woods. The American victory is often cited as a turning point of the Revolutionary War, because it persuaded France to enter the conflict as an ally. Percy Moran, a painter known for historical scenes, created the original composition, and this color halftone version shows how such images were widely reproduced in books and periodicals in the early 1900s. Its place on a Thanksgiving board fits the broader theme of national beginnings and gratitude.
