Beals Becker, a ballplayer for the New York National League club, is the subject here, and the Bain News Service caption card gives the date as June 12, 1911, though the catalog lists the picture as [1905] based on later research. The Bain agency sold news photographs from its New York office, so pictures like this one, taken on glass plates, record how players of the era were posed and presented to newspaper readers. Baseball historians still use these early negatives to check player appearances and team uniforms during the years before widespread newspaper halftone reproduction.
