This glass negative shows Ed Sweeney, a player for the New York American League club, which was still called the Americans and played in Manhattan in 1911. Bain News Service, the New York photo agency whose founder, George Grantham Bain, ran it, sold pictures like this to newspapers that were eager for images of local sports figures. The date and title come from a 2006 research effort by the Society for American Baseball Research, which helps place the portrait in a specific season. Glass plates of this size were the standard for news photography of the period, so the image also shows the working methods of early sports photographers.
